Who he is

Léon Lossy is an 18-year-old painter based in Brussels. His canvases are filled with faces, bodies, eyes, mouths, machines, buildings and signs, always coming together and breaking apart. Faces become maps, bodies turn into shapes, and familiar images take on new meanings. The longer you look, the more you discover.

He doesn’t try to show the world as it is. He creates his own way of seeing it, bringing together images, symbols and words, and leaving space for the viewer to find their own meaning.

Inspired by street art, graffiti and signs, he works in acrylic, spray paint and charcoal: bright pinks, reds, blues, greens and turquoise held together by thick, shifting lines. Behind the energy and strong colours there is also a sense of uncertainty. His paintings are full of life, but their meaning is never completely clear.

His work echoes Cy Twombly’s handwritten marks, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s mix of words and images and Keith Haring’s bold lines. Yet these influences are only a starting point: from one painting to the next, shapes and images move, change and grow, and a visual language of his own is taking form.

At 18, his artistic journey is only beginning: a young painter discovering his own voice, one canvas at a time.
